Strengthening Your Resistance Muscle
Strengthen Your Resistance Muscle To lose weight and keep it off for life, it's crucial to develop a powerful "resistance muscle", a psychological muscle that you flex whenever you stand firm and stick to your healthy eating plan.
Each time you say no (e.g., to an unplanned food or extra serving) you fortify your resistance muscle. Every time you resist, it's much more likely you will be able to resist the next occurrence, and thereafter. Initially it may be difficult to resist a tempting food, however, as you continue to practice this skill set, you will become stronger and resisting will become easier.
Conversely, every time you eat something you aren't supposed to, you weaken your resistance muscle and strengthen your "giving in" muscle. It's not just the calories that matter, it's the habit. Remind yourself daily that it's important how you respond and that it impacts how consistent (whether you resist or give in) you will be in the future. As you change your thinking, you change your behavior. Your actions do affect your weight.
When you stick to your healthy eating plan, you start to see results. As you build your resistance muscle, you will feel more confident and in control of the food you eat. On the fitness floor, you start out lifting smaller weights and add on as you become stronger--the same applies to increasing your resistance muscle. You can begin by experimenting at home, work, and routine environments and then progress to more challenging situations like restaurants, parties, and vacations.
Altering the dialogue in your head is the key to permanent weight loss and enjoyment with food.
